Hone your STEAM skills with a Skateboard Building class
TALK is excited to offer another Skateboard Building Workshop at the University of Louisville Engineering Garage for TechFestLou this year.
Our workshop will be on Friday, August 27 and Saturday August 28. It will be from 3:30 to 7:30 on Friday, and 9:00 to 1:00 on Saturday. There is an optional 3rd session on Sunday August 29 from 9:00 until 1:00 for art and graphics on the boards.
Cost for the first 2 sessions of instructors and materials is $185. The 3rd optional art day is $40.
This is our 13th “Rad Science” Skateboard build, and 4th one at the U of L Engineering garage.

It will be held at the University of Louisville Engineering Garage at 1960 Arthur Street in Louisville, Kentucky.
The minimum age is 11 years old, unless accompanied by an adult.
The maximum class size is 15. COVID safety guidelines in accordance with the CDC and University of Louisville restrictions will be in place.
Teaching this class is Topher Paterno, designer, maker, teacher, skater from NJ and California, he currently resides in Washington DC.
At the start of Day 1, participants will learn about mold shapes, board designs, and more in the classroom.
Continuing on Day 1, participants will move into the “Garage” area, to learn about different Maple Veneer grades, functions, and the glue up process, including a team building exercise to place the veneer in vacuum bags within a 9 minute time requirement.
Finally some of the Maple veneer sandwiches will be placed in a bottle jack hydraulic press for shaping.
Below is a photo from Day 2 of our 2019 TechFestLou Skateboard Build. Teacher Martin Walsh is explaining the importance of the center line measurement and placement of the trucks for the wheels to yield maximum balance and performance.
At the end of Day 2, the Boards have been shaped, sanded, and truck holes have been drilled. They are ready for the art and design of Day 3.
